Apple October product launches — iPad Pro 2022, MacBook Pro M2 Pro and more

Get ready for iPad Pro 2022, new MacBook Pro M2 Pro and much more

An Apple October event is reportedly not happening, but that doesn't mean October isn't a big month for new Apple products.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman recently reported that it is “unlikely” we'll see an event, with Apple instead turning to press releases to herald any new arrivals in October.

And there should certainly be a lot to announce, if rumors about Apple's product pipeline are to be believed. Even after a September that saw new iPhone 14 models, the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch Ultra and the AirPods Pro 2, we reckon there are plenty of Macs, iPads and software updates that need to see the light of day before holiday shopping picks up too much steam.

Here's a quick look at what may be in the cards for Apple during October, which figures to be a very busy month for Apple, even without a standalone product event.

Apple October products latest rumors (Updated Oct. 6)

    • The Prime Day October 2022 deals begin early with $400 savings on MacBook Pro 14-inch laptops, a price drop that comes suspiciously close to an expected October release for new models of both the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.
    • Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports there will be no Apple October event even as Apple moves forward with launching new iPads and Macs this month. The news may come via press release.

    iPhone 14 Plus

We already know what one of the first products Apple will release this month is going to be, and we won't have to wait very long to see it. The iPhone 14 Plus, announced alongside the rest of the iPhone 14 models, hits stores on Friday (October 7). You can preorder the phone now, taking advantage of some of the iPhone 14 deals to lower the cost of the $899 plus-sized handset. As of this writing, Apple estimates an iPhone delivery date between October 11 and 13, if you pre-order an iPhone 14 Plus.

The iPhone 14 Plus shares the 6.7-inch screen size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but otherwise offers the same feature set as the standard iPhone 14 model. That includes an A15 Bionic chipset, a main camera with a bigger sensor to let in more light than the iPhone 13 did and an improved front camera with autofocus and a wider aperture. Because the iPhone 14 Plus is bigger than the standard iPhone, we'd imagine that its battery is bigger, too. Hopefully that will help this final iPhone 14 model join the iPhone 14 Pro Max on the best phone battery life list.

    MacBook Pro 14- and 16-inch with M2

The Apple M2 chipset, the next-generation version of Apple's self-designed silicon, appeared earlier this year, when it debuted in the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro. More M2-powered hardware is almost certainly on the way, and we expect Apple to usher in additional MacBook Pro options featuring this chipset.

More specifically, we might see Pro and Max variants of the M2 chip inside any new MacBook Pro models. The M2 chip itself is a 5-nanometer chip with an improved neural engine. The Max and Pro versions would feature more transistors while boosting the number of CPU and GPU cores.

Don't expect significant hardware changes, at least not based on the rumors we've heard. But it's possible that software improvements like Center Stage could on be on tap of Apple's latest MacBook Pros.

    M2 Mac mini

It's been two years since the Mac Mini became one of the first Macs to run on Apple's M1 chip. With the M2 now out, this monitor-less desktop Mac may be in line for a long-awaited upgrade.

The most likely scenario has the Mac Mini 2022 getting the new M2 chip and that being the extent of the upgrades. That said, earlier in the year, a somewhat fanciful rumor talked about the possibility of a more compact design with more ports than before. We're not sure how much credence to lend to that forecast, but we won't object if that's what Apple does.

iPad Pro 2022 and iPad 2022

Rounding out potential October 2022 Apple hardware releases that could run on updated Apple silicon is the iPad Pro 2022 tablet, last updated in the spring of 2021. This time around, Apple is likely to turn to the M2 chip for both the 11- and 12.9-inch tablets.

Other possible additions to the iPad Pro could be wireless charging and a new Smart Connector on the side of the tablet. Early rumors had talked about the potential addition of a notch to the iPad Pro's display as way of shrinking the bezels, but at a time when the iPhone 14 Pro models have ditched their notch for a cool and useful Dynamic Island feature, this would seem like a backward step.

Also keep an eye on Apple's standard iPad. The 10.2-inch iPad is still running an older chipset, so it could stand to see some upgraded internals. That doesn't mean an M2 chip is bound for this iPad like it is on the Pro models. Instead, we could see a more modest jump to the A14 Bionic. (The current model uses an A13.)

    iPadOS 16

Here's another October release that Apple has already confirmed — right after it said that the iPadOS 16 software update wasn't going to arrive at the same time as iOS 16's mid-September release. Instead Apple is targeting October for the next major update to the iPad's operating system, giving it more time to tinker with new features.

Besides the iOS 16 features already available to iPhone users since September, iPadOS 16 brings Stage Manager, a new multitasking tool, to select tablets. With Stage Manager, you get a visible dock for easily accessing apps and you can resize app windows like you would be able to on a Mac. Originally slated for just M1-powered iPads (and presumably M2 models when they arrive), Apple has broadened support for Stage Manager out to four older iPads.

    iOS 16.1

As mentioned, iOS 16 already shipped, but as is tradition with Apple, not every feature went live at launch. Live Activities — lock-screen widgets that relay up-to-the-minute info as it changes — didn't appear in iOS 16, but they are part of the iOS 16.1 beta. Once that update ships — most likely this month — Live Activities will be ready, too. Hopefully, iOS 16.1 also introduces a fix to the battery problems some upgrades have cited.

    macOS Ventura

There's one final piece of software that needs to come out this fall, and that's macOS Ventura. The latest version of Apple's Mac software is also targeting an October release, Apple has said.

With macOS Ventura, Macs gain some of the updates found in the equivalent iOS apps. You'll be able to share Tap Groups in Safari as you can in iOS 16, and you can edit text messages after sending them, too. Mail gets improved search, and Apple's effort to replace passwords with Passkeys includes the Mac as well as the iPhone and iPad.

Stage Manager is part of the macOS update, and a Continuity Camera feature turns your iPhone into a webcam for an additional angle on video calls.

    Apple's October outlook

We're not saying all of these launches will happen, though many — the software releases plus the iPhone 14 Plus — are already confirmed. It just goes to show that Apple doesn't need a dedicated event to still have a lot going on.

iPhone 14 order delays — here’s the latest delivery times

iPhone 14 order delays — here’s the latest delivery times

The current waiting times for all the iPhone 14 models

The iPhone 14 is here, but it may not arrive at your door for quite a few weeks yet.

The fact that the iPhone 14, particularly the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, are selling well is not a shock. But what may be an unpleasant surprise is that if you order now, you could be waiting for over a month to get your phone. And while the iPhone 14 Plus has yet to go on sale, there's a good chance it will see its own shipping dates delayed too.

If you've not placed your iPhone 14 order yet, and are wondering just when you can expect an iPhone to drop through your letterbox, we've collected the latest shipping data from Apple's own website here.

That way you can figure out when it's best to stay at home in case of delivery, or if it will make it in time for an important date like someone's birthday or your next holiday.

As it stands, it looks like pretty much every version of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is now on backorder until October or early November. It doesn't matter which color you pick, or how much storage you spec, you're going to be waiting at least a month for a new Pro iPhone, and perhaps as long as six weeks if you want the bigger iPhone 14 Pro Max variant.

iPhone 14 delivery date: Apple Store

The good news is that ordering the regular iPhone 14 won't be an issue. You can order one now and have it arrive on Friday, or today if you live in the right area and are willing to pay extra postage.

The iPhone 14 Plus is on sale as of 10/7, but if you're buying now, you'll have to wait the best part of a week before it arrives.

Meanwhile, the Pro models will keep you waiting until the early or mid-November if you buy one now. If things don't improve soon, you'll be needing to put in your iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max orders now if you want to guarantee delivery before the holidays.

AirPods Pro 2 iFixit teardown: You break it, you buy it… again

AirPods Pro 2 iFixit teardown: You break it, you buy it… again

In the last teardown video of Apple’s Far Out event announcements, iFixit has now dissembled the brand-new AirPods Pro 2. Three years after the first AirPods Pro was announced, was Apple able to make this second generation a little bit more repairable? Er… no.

iFixit’s video shows how much you should take care of your AirPods Pro 2. They aren’t fixable at all. Once you open one of the earbuds, forget it. If you need to open the MagSafe case, it will never be the same again, but, to be honest, do not open the MagSafe case as it holds a battery inside.

iFixit brings a short three-minute video showing how AirPods Pro 2 look from the inside, and since they aren’t repairable at all, the site focuses on the e-waste side of it.

With Apple’s goal to become carbon neutral by 2030, it doesn’t seem plausible for the company to keep releasing unrepairable products. iFixit writes:

Apple’s AirPods are the most popular earbuds in the world—they are also among the most unfixable. With the AirPods Pro 2, the flagship line gets a boost, in all arenas, apparently, except the environment. Personalized spatial audio can give you a great sound experience, but can it mute the guilt from wearing unrepairable future-e-waste? With its new pods, could Apple finally be thinking different?

AirPods Pro 2 bring improved Active Noise Cancelling capabilities, a new Adaptive Transparency mode, better sound quality, Bluetooth 5.3 support, and a more useful MagSafe charging case that now features a U1 chip with Find My integration, a built-in speaker, and a lanyard loophole.

This product has been praised by reviewers, but it’s once again important to remember that AirPods Pro 2 are completely unrepairable, so if you break them, you buy them… again.

Apple's new patent: Folding iPhone can repair creases on its own

Apple's new patent: Folding iPhone can repair creases on its own

At present, folding screen mobile phones are becoming more and more popular among the public, and manufacturers are beginning to make efforts in this field. A new Apple patent titled "Electronic Device with Flexible Display Covering Layer" has been exposed recently.

We believe that many people are looking forward to Apple's folding machine, but when it will be released has always been a question, but judging from a lot of news from Apple, its folding screen has been under development.

According to Apple's patent, an electronic device equipped with a hinge can be bent about a bending axis, and the display screen spans the bending axis. To mitigate the number of dents, scratches, or defects in the display cover, the display is covered with a "self-healing" material.

The flexible layer contains a layer of elastic material that can stretch and return to its original shape, like the memory material in some mattresses.

Apple has high requirements for its own products, but the iPhone itself still has many flaws, such as the newly released iPhone 14 Pro will shake when taking pictures with third-party apps, the gap between the body frame is large, and the smart island does not fit.

No matter what form Apple's foldable mobile phone will take, I believe it will bring a lot of shock to the industry. As for the current folding screen mobile phone, which form do you like?

Apple event recap — iPhone 14, Apple Watch 8, new AirPods Pro and more

Apple event recap — iPhone 14, Apple Watch 8, new AirPods Pro and more

Forget the rumors — we've now seen the iPhone 14, Apple Watch 8 and AirPods Pro 2 in the flesh

After month after month of rumors, we now know the official details for Apple's latest smartphones, smartwatches and wireless earbuds. In a 90-minute presentation, Apple detailed a series of product updates, including the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models, the new Apple Watch 8 and two other additions to its smartwatch lineup and the updated AirPods Pro 2.

That's plenty of product news for one afternoon, and if there was a common theme to all the new features, it's that Apple wants to make its devices as indispensable as ever. The new iPhones and Apple Watches have a crash detection feature, for example, and your iPhone will be able to send emergency messages via satellite connectivity.

All those additions are on top of the normal enhancements you'd expect from Apple product updates — a new chipset for the iPhones (or at least the iPhone 14 Pro models), camera improvements across the iPhone lineup, a temperature sensor and low-power mode for the Apple Watch and improved audio features in the AirPods Pro 2.

In addition, Apple introduced an entirely new kind of smart watch, the Apple Watch Ultra, which is targeting athletes, adventurers and other people who work and play in extreme conditions. The Apple Watch Ultra boasts an impressive feature set along with an equally impressive price tag (though not as high a price as had been rumored.)

Here's a closer look at everything Apple announced at its September 7 Far Out event.

    APPLE EVENT PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENTS

iPhone 14: The iPhone 14 isn't a big leap from the iPhone 13, and that includes the new phone's $799 (AU$1,399) price tag. It runs on an A15 system-on-chip as before, but Apple has turned to a 5-core GPU for improved performance over last year's phone. While the main camera is still 12MP, there's a bigger sensor for improved low-light photos.

iPhone 14 Plus: Think of the iPhone 14 Plus as a larger version of the iPhone 14 (or a cheaper, not-as-fully-featured version of the iPhone 14 Pro Max). It's got a 6.7-inch screen and a bigger battery than the 6.1-inch iPhone 14, but otherwise, features are the same.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max: Easily the biggest surprise of the day is the fact that iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max aren't getting the rumored $100 price increase. Instead, they'll cost $999 (AU$1,749) and $1,099 (AU$1,899), respectively. That's very impressive, considering the 4-nanometer A16 Bionic chipset that powers both phones and significant camera improvements, including a 48MP main shooter. The notch is gone, too, replaced by a cutout named Dynamic Island that incorporates animations and notifications.

Apple Watch 8: Evolution not revolution is truly the aim with this watch, which starts at $399 (AU$649) for the GPS-only version. Big changes include a new temperature sensor, geared toward helping women with reproductive planning, and a low-power mode that doubles the battery life.

Apple Watch SE (2022): Apple seems to be following the iPhone SE's naming structure by slapping a year rather than a number at the end of its less expensive entry-level device. The latest Apple Watch SE gets the crash detection and low-battery mode features found in the Apple Watch 8; its starting price also drops to $249 (AU$399).

Apple Watch Ultra: Apple is opting for a different name than the rumored Apple Watch 8 Pro moniker that had been suggested for its rugged smartwatch. But the other expected features are in place, from a 49mm size to twice the baseline battery life. Apple is promising more precise GPS tracking as well. Apple Watch Ultra starts at $799 (AU$1,299), which is less than the rumored $999 price we were expecting.

AirPods Pro 2: The $249 (AU$399) wireless earbuds get a new H2 chip along with a low-distortion audio driver and custom amplifier for improved sound. You'll be able to use the front camera on your iPhone to create a customized spatial audio profile, while other features like active noise cancellation have been improved. Battery life is now 6 hours of playback.
